Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountain Man Rendezvous Results: by Frances K. Foster. Despite the hot weather, 100 shooters and tomahawk throwers registered and competed in competitions at the Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountain Man Rendezvous Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the Grand Encampment Museum in Encampment. Participants ranged in age from elementary school students to seniors (55 and older) and cam from as far away as Michigan. The majority of Saturday's participants were dressed in period clothing, including leather and beaded accessories, to with their black powder shooting arms. In addition to competitions for Sub-Juniors (under age12) kids enjoyed playing in the large water reservoir kept on site in case of fire, a watermelon-eating contest and a candy cannon. Traders from around the state and Colorado offered their wares for sale - leather goods, black powder shooting accessories, knives, clothing and bead work - and demonstrated various crafts such as using bear claws to fashion clothing and staring a fire with flint and tinder.
